Innovative multiplex paper-based electrochemical biosensor and artificial intelligence for smart periprosthetic joint infection and AMR diagnostic
The JPIAMR-ACTION 2023 call, which closed on March 7, 2023, with a total budget of €19 million, attracted numerous projects from 19 countries. Supported by 23 funders, the initiative focuses on developing innovative solutions for the diagnosis and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The project Innovative multiplex paper-based electrochemical biosensor and artificial intelligence for smart periprosthetic joint infection and AMR diagnostic, which began in 2024 and will conclude in 2027, is coordinated by Giulio Maccauro from the IRCCS Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli (Italy) and involves a transnational consortium of academic and industrial partners from Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, and other countries.

The aim of the project Innovative multiplex paper-based electrochemical biosensor and artificial intelligence for smart periprosthetic joint infection and AMR diagnostic is to create sustainable, accessible, and adaptable diagnostic solutions for diverse global contexts, contributing to the improvement of human, animal, and environmental health within the framework of the One Health strategy.

The project, which engages an international consortium, features Sense4Med not only as an observer but also as a key leader in developing an innovative diagnostic platform based on ultra-sensitive biosensors for the rapid and accurate detection of bacterial and fungal infections, as well as for identifying antimicrobial resistance patterns. By leveraging advanced bioelectronic technologies and integrating point-of-care diagnostic approaches, the project aims to revolutionize AMR monitoring in both clinical and environmental settings.

The JPIAMR-ACTION 2023 call demonstrated the strong commitment of the European and international scientific community to fostering technological innovation to combat AMR. With a total of 17 selected projects, involving 93 partners from 23 countries, the initiative strengthens collaboration among academic institutions, research entities, and companies.
